The morning of 22 November was a very special one for one of the Residentia Ons Huis residents, as she celebrated a special milestone birthday.
Dorothy Papacostas had the privilege of celebrating her 100th birthday among special friends, who all sang ‘Happy Birthday’while she blew out the candles and made a wish.
Dorothy was born in Port Elizabeth in 1918, where she grew up with her two brothers (Daniel and Lewies) and two sisters (Johanna and Suzan).
She went on to marry a Greek man, and they had two sons, Tony and Chronis. Dorothy lost her husband very early, and was left to raise her two sons on her own, which she managed by baking away in the bakery she owned.
Before she moved to Ons Huis in 2005, she stayed with her son in Randpark Ridge, where she loved to read, sew, knit, cook, shop and listen to soft music. She was also an avid netball player in her younger years.
These days she keeps herself busy by watching her favourite television soapie, 7de Laan, while enjoying her tea and chocolates.
According to Dorothy, the most important thing to do in life, is to love and cherish your children – always.
