Witpoortjie’s Phumi has his sights set on the Olympic Games

He keeps on excelling in the sport

The 20-year-old Phumelele Cele started boxing four years ago and since then he has excelled in the sport, bagging quite a number of titles along the way.

Phumi, as he is known, once again made his club and coach proud when he got into the ring.

Phillip du Randt, the head coach at Vikings Boxing Academy, explained, “Phumi participated in a tournament in Botswana on 20 September, where he managed to finish his opponent off in clinical style, winning on points. He then had the opportunity to fight against a boxer from the United Kingdom on 10 November. Although his opponent was bigger and heavier than he was, he fought extremely well. He eventually was declared the winner by a two-to-one decision, meaning he won two out of the three rounds.

“He added that Phumi is determined to compete at all the competitions next year, including the All Africa Games, the Zone Championships and the Commonwealth Games. “If he does well in these competitions, he will be aiming to qualify for the Olympic Games in 2020,” Phillip said.

Phillip concluded by saying that a boxer of Phumi’s stature has a lot of expenses and relies on the support and generosity of the community to donate equipment, supplements and cash. “If anyone out there finds it in his or her heart to help this young man, it will be greatly appreciated. He is one of our future world champions and needs support now – not after he has become a champion. We appeal to the community to help Phumi reach for the stars,” he said.
