Charity Begins with Me’s Stephan wants to provide more than just food for the body

He wants to feed their minds as well

Stephan Ferreira, the founder of Charity Begins with Me, feeds approximately 950 children once a week, and now wants to provide food for their minds as well.

“For the past two years, I have been able to grow and maintain our current feeding scheme. We now have up to 950 children from various informal settlements who join us for lunch every Saturday,” he explained.

Stephan added that he plans to continue with the feeding scheme, but he also wants to start focusing on feeding the children’s minds. He said, “I also want to focus on smaller programmes and activities to uplift, develop, teach and inspire these children.”

He said that, because of the lack of electricity in the areas where the children live, their exposure to computers and other electronic devices is limited. “The little training they receive at their various schools, is often focused on theory only, making it extremely difficult for them to apply their knowledge practically to develop their skills,” said Stephan.

That is the reason why he decided to launch a new project, where volunteers will be able to donate their time to teach the children basic computer skills, “I have approached Heinrich Bouwer from RapidServ IT Solutions, a Krugersdorp business, to help us out with this project, by acting as a fully outsourced IT department to take care of any hardware and software needs we might have. RapidServ is passionate about community development and is committed to working with us to ensure we have access to the necessary IT support to guarantee this project is a success,” he said.

He concluded by saying, “We are hoping to officially launch this project in the next few weeks. But, we will not be able to achieve this goal without the help of the community. If anyone is keen to donate unwanted laptops and tablets, they can contact me on 072 5933 866.”
