Grass clippings cause drain blockage

JRA employees found grass clippings inside the subsoil drain on Oribi Road in Constantia Kloof.

Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester has conveyed a message from the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to the residents of the area, pleading with them to refrain from dumping in subsoil drains.

The plea was made after JRA employees found grass clippings inside the subsoil drain on Oribi Road in Constantia Kloof.

Amelia indicated that the visit by JRA comes after she laid a complaint at the monthly Regional Councillors’ Forum on Friday, 25 January. “This forum is a meeting of councillors and officials from all of the entities involved in the Council. These meetings are very important as they ensure accountability to the residents,” she explained.

The subsoil drains were installed in this area to control underground water while a study of the origin of the water was set to be conducted by JRA in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Affairs.

Amelia assured residents that the study would still take place. “I was informed at Caucus on Monday, 28 January by the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, councillor Nico de Jager, that we will not lose the 2018 budgetary allocation toward the underground water study, in spite of the study not having been conducted yet,” she concluded.
