Florida Police warn residents to be careful at licensing station

Follow these tips to avoid becoming a victim

The Florida Police provided some valuable tips to help community members avoid falling victim to con men outside the Florida Drivers Licensing and Testing Centre (DLTC).

“A number of incidents where people were robbed or conned at the Florida DLTC have been reported to Florida Police. In an effort to help community members avoid falling victim to these criminals, we have put together a few tips,” said Captain Lydia Dikolomela, Florida Police spokesperson.

She added that the most important thing to remember is that there are no shortcuts to any of the processes at the licensing centre, and said, ” You can only obtain what you need by queuing and following the normal processes – ask the staff inside for more information”.

She urged people to be wary of those who approach them outside the DLTC premises and offer to queue on their behalf. “These people may even be wearing a security company uniform when they offer to queue for you or speed up the process. They will then take your documents and money and never return. The elderly and women on their own are their usual targets.”

When visiting the DLTC, community members should always be cautious in the area around the caravan where the photos are taken, as several handbags and other valuable items have been stolen there recently. “Please check with the staff members inside the licensing centre first as to whether your application requires you to purchase photos, as some of the required photos are taken inside the centre,” Dikolomela said.

She concluded by saying that the golden rule to follow is simple: “Never take advice from any other person, except the staff members inside the the centre”.

Community members are urged to report all criminal incidents or suspicious activity at the DLTC to the Florida Police on 071 675 7145/ 7146 or 011 831 7000.

Any corruption by City officials at the DLTC can be reported to 0800 203 712.
