For the young Jonathan Bothma, boxing is more than just a sport – it is a passion, a lifestyle – something that he lives, eats and breathes.
Jonathan started his boxing career in Krugersdorp West four years ago, and had three fights, of which he won one and lost two.
He changed clubs three years ago, and in August 2016, Shorne Moorcroft started coaching him at the boxing club in the Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre.
Shorne said, “When Jonathan started at my club, he weighed 91kg and was an orthodox right-handed boxer. I brought his weight down to under 81kg and also changed his style to left-handed, or Southpaw, as we call it.”
Jonathan has had eight fights under his new coach, of which he won six and lost only two. “In 2018, he won the Johannesburg Amateur Boxing Organisation (Jabo) district title and was selected for the Jabo Gauteng Team. At the Gauteng Championships, he had a close fight, and lost out on the gold medal by only a few points.
He won a silver medal and received his district colours,” said Shorne. He concluded by saying that Jonathan was very excited about the year ahead, and believes that he will be competing at the National Boxing Championships, where he will be crowned as a national champ. “Because of his natural boxing talent, Jonathan has a bright future in boxing ahead of him.”
