The City of Johannesburg has approved a new Priority Economic Zone Framework.
According to the Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba, this is seen as a significant milestone on the way to achieving the multi-party government’s goal of a minimum five per cent economic growth by 2021.
“The primary objective of the framework, which gives effect to the city’s economic growth strategy, is to identify priority economic areas and sectors and define a set of interventions that will promote their growth and development,” said Mashaba.
He added, “The framework serves to inform the economic development efforts of the city, makes recommendations with respect to new provisions and planning of new infrastructure, and indicates areas of concerns, focus, maintenance, renewal and upgrading.”
Roodepoort and Florida were identified as part of the Priority Economic Zone. The recognised areas are those that hold the greatest potential for leverage and existing infrastructure.
The spatial targeting of economic interventions, especially in lagging regions and localities, is increasingly being recognised as a key driver of development internationally.
The framework forms part of a comprehensive set of interventions adopted by the multi-party government, including the Inner City Revitalisation Programme and Inclusionary Housing Framework, which seek to promote economic development and job creation while also building an inclusive society that provides meaningful redress through pro-poor development.
