Report criminal activities and save lives

Bullying and insulting someone on social media platforms is a crime

The Roodepoort Youth Desk recently joined hands with Constable Shumikazi Mbuli from the Roodepoort Police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit, and engaged with residents about crime prevention.

They walked the streets talking to young and old about the importance of tipping-off the police and preventing criminal activities, as well as how to protect themselves against crime. They also handed out pamphlets about Crimestop.

“This is part of our responsibility to make Roodepoort safer for our children and every other law-abiding citizen,’’ Constable Mbuli said.

Residents were urged to report any information that can assist with exposing people involved in any illegal activities, and were reminded that they could remain anonymous. It was also stated that no informer’s identity will be compromised.

Some of the tips that were provided are:

• When a loved one goes missing, report it immediately. There is no waiting period of 24 hours.

• When providing information to the police, remember to tell them who did what to whom, when, where, why and how.

• Crime can also be passive and not involve action, like knowing that someone abuses a child, wife or girlfriend and not reporting it to the police.

• Bullying and insulting someone on social media platforms is a crime, even under a false cyber identity.

• Buying stolen goods is a crime and can lead to imprisonment and conviction.

• Report criminals and their activities anonymously on 08600 10111 or log on to https://www.crimeline.co.za.
