Door to door saddening stories

Led by Dawn leader, Nomafrench Mbombo, and Ward 114 PR councillor, Belinda Echeozonjoku, the campaign reached out to Alexandra, Zandspruit and Cosmo City.

Shattering stories by victims of abuse living in various townships were heard by the DA leadership when they conducted a door to door campaign on Tuesday, 19 March.

The DA Women’s Network (Dawn) spent the day listening to stories from women that have been victimised in their own townships.

Led by Dawn leader, Nomafrench Mbombo, and Ward 114 PR councillor, Belinda Echeozonjoku, the campaign reached out to the Alexandra, Zandspruit and Cosmo City.

Belinda, who was appalled at the number of cases of violence against women and children, reflected on the campaign. “We came across horror stories that included women being asked for [political party] membership cards before being given jobs, and if they refused, they lost the opportunity.”

“We also listened to 17 alleged rape cases with case numbers that have not been attended to, according to the parents of the victims – either dockets go missing, or they are allegedly asked by police whether the children have an infection.”

Nomafrench called for Minister Bheki Cele to attend to the matters. “We will be following up with the Minister to see whether there will be justice for these young victims of alleged rape who were threatened to keep quiet,” she promised.
