Recently, Princess High School started a garden project with the purpose of decreasing the effects of poverty in the school and the community.
The product was initiated by learners in the school, and spearheaded by the Representative Council of Learners’ Deputy President, Lupumlo Ngcukana. It will be part of the school’s Ubuntu Campaign. The project will assist learners, especially those with limited financial means, by providing them with vegetables.

“One of the main ideas behind this garden project is to change the minds of the learners who are angry and bitter at the world because of their living circumstances. This project will help alleviate social issues,” said the Head of Media for the Representative Council of Learners at the school, Tony Maphalala.
The learners would not be able to achieve their objective without the help of Anglo American, who are sponsoring them and helping to get more sponsors on board. Reel Gardening company taught the learners how to maintain and take care of the garden so that it continues to produce. They were also sponsored with seeds, gardening equipment, safety attire (in the form of goggles/ glasses, gloves and shoes) and food.
“We are grateful to everyone who sponsored us and made this project possible. Our sponsors included DRA Projects SA, Carmaky Engineering, Product Link, Select PPE (Pty) Ltd and various individuals,” Lupumlo said.
