The theme for the recent West Rand Toastmasters club meeting was ‘Toastmaster Journey’, and the evening was dedicated to trips down memory lane.
The meeting was called to order by Ernest Watkins, the Club’s Sergeant-At-Arms, before the formal proceedings were kicked off by Esther Dreyer, the Club’s President.
Max Kaan gave the Toast to Toastmasters International and Malcolm Harris was the Joke Master for the evening.
There were several visiting Toastmasters at the meeting, including Elaine O’Gorman, Lucinda Harman and Shaun and Joy Goodbrand from the Bacon and Egg Toastmasters Club. Other visiting toastmasters were Gadi Moeng, the Area S2 Director, as well as Tebogo Mojakane, the Division S2 Director.
Gadi was the Toastmaster of the Evening.. She spoke about the journeys of various members of the Club and also congratulated Stephanie Watkins, the Club’s Secretary and Treasurer, on achieving her Distinguished Toastmaster Award.
There were three speeches for the evening. They were kicked off with Glen Campbell’s speech, titled ‘Feedback Competition S2 2019’, which also concluded her HPL project as Contest Convener for the S2 Area contest that took place in March.
This was followed by Shaun Goodbrand’s educational speech on the Pathways programme. The evening was concluded with Alwyn van Wyngaarden’s educational speech, ‘The Window of Selling’.
Lucinda Harman gave a very good evaluation of Alwyn’s speech and Joy Goodbrand, who was the Table Topics Mistress for the evening, kept everyone entertained with her story of how she chartered a Toastmistress Club in Durban in 1979.
Before the evening’s activities were concluded, Esther announced that there would be a three-day speech course presented for Girls’ Town in Randfontein in May and explained, “This is a community-based project in which the training will be provided free of charge.”
The winners for the evening were as follows:
• Alwyn van Wyngaarden (Best Speech)
• Gadi Moeng (Best Contributor)
• Thato Moeng (Best Table Topic)
