Albertina Sisulu Road is a nightmare for motorists

Traffic congestion is at a maximum and it sometimes takes 20 to 30 minutes just to cross Albertina Sisulu Road.

Motorists have shown concern about the traffic lights that are constantly not working on Albertina Sisulu Road.

According to a local motorist, Ellie James, who uses Albertina Sisulu Road almost every day, the traffic lights at the intersections of Main Reef Road with Helpmekaar Road, Winze Drive (at the Sesli Blanket and Linen Factory), Granville Avenue, Dobsonville Road, Arthur Matthews Avenue and Albertina Sisulu Road, are constantly out of order, which causes daily traffic backlogs.

“On the N1 North Maraisburg Road Westbound off-ramp towards Albertina Sisulu Road, the traffic lights have been non-functional for weeks. What is frustrating road users and me is that in peak hour afternoon traffic, the Outsurance pointsmen are there to direct traffic for only a short amount of time. Traffic congestion is at a maximum and it sometimes takes 20 to 30 minutes just to cross over onto Albertina Sisulu Road. Nobody has been seen to fix the above issues and constant delays occur, resulting in accidents because road users take chances when they are in a hurry. Something needs to be done – fast,”said James.

The Record contacted the City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, who stated that most of the traffic lights at the intersections indicated are working, according to their investigations. These include the intersections at Arthur Matthews Avenue, Albertina Sisulu Road, Dobsonville Road, Granville Avenue and Winze Drive.

“We do however have problems in the vicinity of Supla Rocla, where illegal connections have been made to the power line supplying the traffic lights. The reason there is no power to the lights at Main Reef and Spencer Roads is because the supply cable has been stolen. We will be replacing it. We also urge customers and motorists to contact City Power immediately when they see traffic or public lights not working. The average length of time it takes for us to restore electricity to traffic signals is within 24 hours, and seven days for public lights. Motorists should please call City Power on 0860 56 28 74 so that we can attend to the problems as soon as possible,” Mangena said.
