With the purpose to uplift the community in Ward 85, its councillor, Sonja Meyer got approval from the City Council to include the upgrade of the Strubens Valley storm water/ sewer system in the budget of 2019.
“As we all know, blocked storm water drains have been a problem for at least the past 10 years. The areas were the problem was most noticeable were at the circle on Fredenharry Road and at the bottom of the green belt area just before the dam.
“The problem manifested itself because of the additional development the council allowed on land that was not earmarked for residential and/ or commercial development,” said Meyer.
According to Meyer, the present system could not handle the volume of water and sewage that was deposited into it.
“All the calls to the council could and would not solve the problem as the present system was not designed to handle such a volume. The only solution was to upgrade/ replace the present system,” Mayer added.
She also mentioned that the project is set to start at the top of Strubens Valley (Montrose Avenue and Wilgespruit Crescent) and to speed it up the two phases have been awarded to different contractors.
Storage yards were established and Meyer thanked Mr Botha for the hiring out his property (next to KFC) to the contractors.
“As we know it as always a sensitive (and real) security problem to have strange contractors in our suburbs. BCI will assist in monitoring the neighbourhood and contractors yard,” Mayer said.
She requested residents to assist with entry to their properties in order for the contractors to lay new pipes.
She thanked residents in advance, but assured them that in the long-term, it will be worth the inconvenience if the storm water and sewer problems in the green belt and along Fredenharry Road are solved.
