The City of Johannesburg is urging pensioners to become well-informed about the Pensioners’ Rebates.

The following is information every pensioner residing in the City of Johannesburg needs to know:

Application forms to benefit from these rebates can be obtained from any City customer service centre or the city’s website (https://www.joburg.org.za), or they can be emailed to you if you provide your email address.

The completed forms can be submitted to any City customer service centre or they can be emailed to rebates@joburg.org.za. Alternatively, they can be posted to Rates and Taxes (Rebates), PO Box 5000 Johannesburg, 2000.

The forms should be submitted along with the following documents:A copy of your South African identification document, a copy of your pension card, proof of income, a copy of your bank statement and the application form, all certified by a Commissioner of Oaths.

To qualify for a pensioner’s rebate, one must be 60 years of age or older. In the case of a dual ownership, at least one of the owners must be 60 years or older. Pensioners’ rebates apply only to properties used as places of primary residence. Pensioners must own the property and personally occupy it. The property value as stated in the 2018 General Valuation Roll must not exceed R2 500 000.

The approved property rebates are those for the 2019/ 2020 financial year, and remain unchanged. The residents’ property rebate remains R350 000, which means that the first R350 000 of the value of all residential property is exempted from rating.

The pensioner property rebate threshold remains R250 000.

There is a 100 per cent rebate for pensioner owners whose gross monthly household income is higher than R9 753 but lower than R16 753 and who reside on a property valued at not more than R2 500 000.

Pensioners aged 70, irrespective of income, who own and who reside in a property valued at not more than R2 500 000 will qualify for a 100 per cent rebate.

Pensioners on National Security Grants also qualify for a 100 per cent rebate. Pensioner rebates remain valid until the next Property Valuations.
