Today, 16 July, in 1960, Penelope Jane Dunlop was born.

Popularly known by her stage name PJ Powers, Penelope was born in KwaZulu-Natal and began her singing career as lead singer of the all-girl group Pantha in 1979.

When the group disbanded, she went on to lead the rock band Hotline which produced some of the biggest hits of the 1980s.

The popularity of the band’s music in the townships earned PJ her nickname ‘Thandeka’.

PJ Powers has recorded 15 albums and is well-known for her UK chart hit World In Union, which she recorded with Ladysmith Black Mambazo in 1995. She performed the song live at the opening of the 1995 Rugby World Cup in Cape Town for a worldwide television audience.

She is also well-known for the hit Jabulani, which was written by bass guitarist, George van Dyk.

PJ has shared the stage with the late Hugh Masekela, Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading and Sibongile Khumalo, among others.

She sang for Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom, King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and at the inauguration of President Nelson Mandela.

Since 2011, she has ventured into inspirational and motivational speaking through her company, The Power of Appreciation.
