Trinityhouse Little Falls Preparatory School has put out a reading challenge to other schools to determine which school is able to read for the most minutes.
As part of the Read & Reap book club, founded by the school, they have set themselves a goal of reading for a total of 1 000 000 minutes as a school. So far, they have managed to read for more than 250 000 minutes.
The coordinator of this project and learner, Jolaine Maritz, discussed the fun elements of the programme after a class reaches the target. “There are monthly rewards and annual rewards,” she said.
She said, “The monthly rewards include a floating trophy plus individual spoils to every member in the winning class as well as monthly spot prizes which include a big snack hamper.
“Annual rewards include, and the first one is my favourite, colouring the hair of our principal, Mrs Cammell, and our three deputy principals, Mrs Packer, Mrs Strydom and Mr Smit – purple!
“Secondly, the most important reward is improving your own vocabulary, your spelling and of course learning a new way to fall asleep easily.”
“Thirdly, every participant will receive 10 Dojo points – this is a nice bump to your next sticker. Fourthly, every learner who participated will receive a 10-minute longer break. Fifthly, every learner will receive one of the famous Ouma Gina’s cupcakes to enjoy during their longer break, and lastly, the winning pride will be announced and each pride member will receive a special gift,” she explained.
Jolaine also explained that learners can read anything from books to magazines and articles on the internet.
