Today in history: HHP is born in Mafikeng

Throughout Hip Hop Pantsula’s music, he constantly refers to his hometown of Mafikeng as “Maf-Town”.

Jabulani “Jabba” Tsambo, whose stage name is Hip Hop Pantsula or HHP, was born in Mafikeng, North West Province on 14 September 1980.

The South African Motswako hip hop artist was raised in Mmabatho, and attended Saint Alban’s College in Pretoria.

HHP first broke onto the music scene as part of the high school friends group Verbal Assassins, who recorded their debut album Party with producer Chicco Twala, before breaking up in 1997.

He has released numerous music albums, namely Introduction in 2000, Maf Town in 2001, O Mang? in 2003, YBA 2 NW in 2005, Acceptance Speech in 2007, Dumela in 2009, Motswafrika in 2011, and more recently Motswako High School in 2014.

He won the third season of Strictly Coming Dancing in 2007, alongside his professional dance partner Haley Bennett.

He was also honoured at the inaugural Mafikeng Golden Stars Awards in 2007 and was nominated for Best International Act at the 2010 BET Awards.

The hip hop star died on 24 October 2018 in Randburg, at the tender age of 38 years.
