Nedbank Cup dreams shattered in Round 2

Golden Drifters Football Club’s dream of being among the last 32 teams in the draw for the elite Nedbank Cup competition have crumbled after they were ousted from the tournament in the second round.
The Zandspruit-based outfit travelled to the North-West province on Sunday, 15 September, where they met their worst nightmare, Maholosiane Football Club, which gave them their marching orders from the tournament after thrashing them 5–0.

The president of the club, Proud Shoko, who was pleased by his side’s performance, in spite of the loss, attributed the loss to the numerous injuries they had sustained going into the game.
“The second round was supposed to be played on 29 September (giving us enough time to prepare), but we receive correspondence that the game had been brought forward because of the opening of the league,” he said.
“Going into this game, we thought our players were recovered from the injuries they had sustained in previous games. However, they had not recovered fully, leading to a minimum of players being available for the match. In addition, we had to prioritise some players for the opening of the league, which happens soon,” he added.
Keitumetsi Baloyi, who scored two brilliant goals in the first round of the Nedbank Cup against D-10 FC, sustained an injury during Saturday’s game, and will sadly be off the pitch for a few weeks as he recovers. He may even miss the SAB League 2019/ 2020 opener against Sibanye Gold Kloof at the Muldersdrift Video Stadium on 22 September.
