If generosity and empathy are the barometers of success, then the world will come to know the name of Layla Mohamed. This inspiring young woman has touched the hearts of her community. Instead of being showered with gifts for her 18th birthday, Layla asked her friends and family to use those resources to donate R100 to #keepagirlchildinschool.
For a young person, turning 18 is massive milestone. It symbolises becoming an adult. It symbolises maturity. What better way to embody that maturity than with a selfless act that could help up to 100 other young women. Layla highlighted that many young females miss several days of school as they are unable to afford adequate sanitary protection. With a R100 donation, a set of 3 reusable female hygiene products can go to a recipient. These reusable female hygiene products, when properly cared for, can last for 5 years. This means a girl’s entire high school career would not be hampered by her monthly cycle.

Originally from Cape Town, this Discovery resident attends the Liberty Church. Layla was inspired by her faith to help others. In a message to her friends, she quoted Acts 20 v35: “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. Layla’s mother, Ruth, pledged the first five packs and so far they have collected enough for over 70 packs. Layla will wait until the first week in October to stop taking donations. The target is 100 so hopefully a late rush can see her meet her goal.
As for her future, Layla is hoping to attend the University of the Witwatersrand. There she hopes to study Forensic Science or Occupational Therapy. Currently, she is aiming for distinctions in Business Studies and Life Sciences. With a bright mind, a big heart and a love for solving mysteries, there is little doubt Layla can accomplish anything she puts her mind to.
