Give the community reliable power

Is there light at the end of the City Power tunnel?

We note with continued distress the lack of mention of the upgrade to the power feed which runs from Florida through Hamberg, Cresswell Park and Georginia to the Roodepoort CBD. For twenty years we have been told it’s on the IDP, and will DEFINITELY HAPPEN within the next 18 months.

The supply was already aging when our family moved in forty years ago. Now the Mayor has promised, so we are told, to supply electricity to the informal settlement at the Roodepoort Rugby Club. (They are already helping themselves – yesterday’s count was six illegal lines strung openly across Albertina Sisulu Road, about which City Power and Metro Police do nothing).

He CANNOT provide a SINGLE connection there until the upgrade is complete, and until our side of the line is no longer a spur, but can be backfed from the opposite direction should the need arise in the event of an outage.

Our Mayor must please remember that the people who have been ignored for these upgrades are, for the most part, the same people who have conscientiously tried to pay their municipal accounts every month.

In this New South Africa, doesn’t THAT count for anything? Has it reached the point where NOBODY pays anything yet still expects homes, essential services and all the rest? Life doesn’t work that way. People need to wake up and GROW up.

So come on, City Power – let’s celebrate the 21st birthday of that promise by giving the community reliable power.
