Delays are inevitable on the corner of Honeyball and Christiaan De Wet

“This is not a one- or two-day fix,” said Gert Niemand, councillor for Ward 84.

A large hole was brought to the attention of ward councillors and the City of Johannesburg on 2 October.

The hole, which was originally thought to be a pothole, was confirmed to be a sinkhole caused by a water leak under the road. The water caused the tar to collapse, creating a very deep hole right next to the pedestrian crossing on the corner of Honeyball Avenue and Christiaan de Wet Road.

Running water could be seen inside the hole, meaning repairs will take longer than usual. The water is said to be coming from a water line, meaning that Joburg Water first needs to fix the leak before repairs on the road can be conducted. Once the water has been dealt with, the Johannesburg Roads Agency can move forward with the road repairs.

Joburg Water has begun the process of resolving the water problem, but this is not an easy fix and unfortunately cannot be completed in a few days.

Ward 84 councillor, Gert Niemand, has said that while this sinkhole will cause an inconvenience he is asking residents and motorists in the area to please remain patient, cautious and vigilant while the problem is being resolved.
