Squash excellence at Western Rackets

Squash tops the list as the healthiest sport

Western Rackets Squash Club held its annual club championships from 8 to 19 October. Seven categories covering multiple ages and skill levels gave every squash enthusiast a chance to enjoy some healthy competition.

Western Rackets is a historic squash club, having hosted several top local and international players since its inception in 1978. The top three individual categories were the A B and C Sections. The final of the C Section was contested between Louis Nel and Sean Martins with Nel emerging victorious by 3 sets to 2.

The final of B Section also went the full 5 sets, as Frank Flint edged Pieter van Aswegen, also by 3–2. The final of the A Section was a chance for Dewald van Niekerk to test his skills against the South African Top 10 ace, Devon Hendrikse. Van Niekerk made Hendrikse work for every point in a nearly two-hour contest characterised by lengthy rallies and consistent hitting. Hendrikse’s experience would ultimately prove decisive as he would finish a valiant Van Niekerk off in four sets, 3–1.

Squash tops Forbes’ list of the healthiest sports ahead of rowing and rock climbing. Western Rackets club chairman, Emile Biagio, shared the benefits of squash. ”Squash has no age limits and is more affordable than most sports. It is also played indoors which means it is an all-year, any-season sport. Social leagues enable you to meet new friends, relieve stress and get fit”. Biagio also mentioned you can watch free squash at PSA Squash TV as well as Youtube to get an idea of the skill and endurance that is necessary for this unique sport.
