The robbery of a learner results in a light motor vehicle accident, shots being fired, and the arrest of three suspects.

The robbery of a young learner on the corner of Payne Street and Corlett Avenue in Witpoortjie resulted in a light motor vehicle accident and shots being fired on 13 November.

According to an eyewitness who had been involved in an accident not long before this incident, he was travelling down Payne Street at approximately 1pm when he noticed two suspicious men walking towards Corlett Avenue. He then noticed a young learner coming from Corlett Avenue and turning onto Payne Street.

He slowed down to keep an eye on the situation and as the young boy and the two men crossed paths, the boy was attacked. The eyewitness said he saw the boy being kicked and beaten up, and while he could not confirm this, he believes he saw a knife being pulled out and the boy being stabbed. The boy ran off, and has not been seen since.

A light blue Toyota Tazz then came down the road and the two attackers hastily got in, with the young boy’s phone still in their possession. Roodepoort Police officers, who were still in the area after the initial accident involving the eyewitness, then allegedly chased the Tazz and shots were fired. The Tazz then collided with a black Ford Fiesta that was waiting at a stop street.

Both vehicles sustained severe damage, especially the Tazz. Netcare 911, Roodepoort Police, First Help, and ER24 attended the scene and all three suspects were arrested by the officers. One of them was treated for minor injuries he sustained when hitting the windshield.

The driver of the Fiesta (aged 27) and her daughter (aged six) have been taken to hospital by ER24 for further examinations after the mother complained about her right leg. The six-year-old girl appeared to have no serious injuries, but her chin was cut open.
