Three caught trying to steal copper cables

ICE Community Policing members help apprehend suspects

The fight against crime and the destruction of infrastructure continue unabated. Watchful community groups are pitching in to aid police and one such organisation is ICE Community Policing. With their help, police were able to remove three suspected cable thieves from the streets of Roodepoort on Wednesday, 20 November.

Just after 10pm on Wednesday night, two ICE patrollers entered a field near Rail Street on the suspicion that there might be illegal activity in progress. There they found three men attempting to dig up a large cable. Once startled, one of the men attempted to flee while his two accomplices hid in the nearby bushes. Founder of ICE Community Policing, Luqmann Rahim, congratulated his patrollers, saying, “Our guys showed great intuition closing in on three cable thieves who were caught in the act”. The suspects were apprehended and handed to Florida Police.

Captain Lydia Mtila-Dikolomela of Florida Police confirmed, ”Three men have been arrested for attempted cable theft. The men are between the ages of 34 and 39, and will be appearing at the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.”

The men were found with spades and pitchforks in their possession and fortunately they were caught before being able to do any serious damage to the cable.

Police, in conjunction with brave community members, are slowing making progress but members of the public are asked to please assist with any tip-offs that can assist crime prevention. These tip-offs can be directed to your nearest police station or Community Policing Forum.
