Masters celebrates another toast with Toastmasters

Next meeting will be held on 5 December at Pizza del Forno at Flora Centre, starting at 7pm.

The West Rand Toastmasters held their 475th meeting on 21 November. The theme was ‘Communication’ and the word of the evening was ‘zonked’.

The meeting was called to order by the acting president, Thato Majela, who welcomed the guests, and secretary Jacqui Motaung read the minutes of the previous meeting. Thato yielded control to the Toastmaster of the Evening, and Glenn Campbell introduced the role players who each gave a short explanation of what their roles entailed.

“We had three prepared speeches – Michael Glencross delivered his speech titled WOW for Toastmasters, Jacqui’s speech was titled Sister Act and Alwyn van Wyngaarden delivered his speech titled What I see and Hear,” Glenn explained.

“Table topics, which were chaired by our Table Topics Master, Ernest Watkins, became a game of charades. Our members and guests were divided into two teams, and various books were used to give the meanings of words in either Zulu, Venda or another language. Members and guests were requested to play out the word and the meaning had to be translated into either English or Afrikaans. The winner was Team B represented by Tebogo, one of our guests. This was a very unusual Table Topics and Impromptu Speech session as it did not involve speaking,” Glen elaborated.

Time keeper, Thato read out the times of the speeches and the grammarian, Ines Leal, gave her grammarian report whilst the members voted for the winners. The winners were announced as Glen for best contributor, Toastmaster guest Tebogo who represented Team B as best table topic, Edna Kamanga as best evaluator, and Jacqui Motaung for best speech.

The next meeting will be the Toastmaster year-end function on 5 December at Pizza del Forno at Flora Centre. The event will start at 7pm.
