Today in history: Nelson Mandela is buried

On 15 December 2013, Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela was buried in Qunu in the Eastern Cape.

This is where he attended Primary School and where he was given the name ‘Nelson’ by his school teacher who had difficulties pronouncing his name.

Although 4 000 people attended the funeral service, only 450 people were allowed to attend the burial service.

Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham were among the people of prominence who attended the burial service.

Nelson Mandela died on 5 December 2013 at the age of 95, in his home in Johannesburg.
