Community spirit is built by extending the warmth of hospitality to those around you. Welcoming local rivals with open arms was Constantia Kloof Primary School that hosted the 16th edition of its annual invitational night swimming gala on Thursday, 5 March.
Perennial powerhouse Weltevreden Park Primary School, rising stars Charterhouse Preparatory and historical force St Catherine’s Convent joined their hosts for an evening of aquatic entertainment under lights. The warm evening was perfect for swimming as family and friends packed every inch of free space around the pool to cheer on their young torpedoes.
Rudi van Dyk, Head of Sport at Constantia Kloof Primary beamed, “It’s a chance for the kids to swim under lights. The timing is good for parents too who can come by after work and get near the pool.” All four schools put in competitive efforts, with each school bagging a few medals to avoid leaving empty-handed. Taking home the lion’s share of the silverware, however, was Weltevreden Park Primary that topped the scoreboard at the end of the evening.
They were made to fight for every length by a determined Charter House Prep, with principal Desmond Zeeling in high spirits about the event and his school’s performance. “It’s about the vibe; it’s just great to be here. We are pursuing that A league spot and we are heading in the right direction,” he stated. Colleen Main of St Catherine’s concurred, saying, “It’s an awesome event. The girls really enjoy it and it’s very well organised.”
Constantia Kloof Primary principal, Hannes Fourie revelled in the success of the annual event as well as the spirit in and out the pool. “We are very proud of the team. I’d also like to say a big thanks to all the schools for accepting the invitation. It’s great to have everyone here,” he said, closing out the annual event aimed at showing appreciation for the community, but most importantly, the talent in the pool.
