Open letter to Cyril Ramaphosa and Bheki Cele

Annalise Martins of Fleurhof writes

Dear President Ramaphosa and Minister Bheki Cele

I am writing today as a very concerned and disheartened law-abiding citizen of South Africa.

My family and our community have once again become victims of crime, and when reporting our cases to the Florida Police Station, our cases are not attended to.

It was declared publicly by the President that there will be more visibility of police and the army on the streets; thus far I have seen nothing. In the past week alone there have been more than five incidences of armed robbery, attempted murder and attempted hijacking in my area.

Criminals reign supreme in our area and the police are aware that the “old” houses in Fleurhof are a hot spot, but they choose to remain complacent. The people of Fleurhof are law-abiding citizens who remain in their houses during the lockdown. I have not seen anyone disobeying the law, yet we are not safe in our own homes.

We are pleading with you to protect our community as you protect the other communities. We are fighting two pandemics – one of the exponential increase in crime during the lockdown, and Covid-19.

Our lives matter as much as the next community.
