Residents of a complex in Lindhaven made a gruesome and tragic discovery on the cold and wet morning of Tuesday, 28 April, when they found the body of a newborn baby in a dustbin.
According to Russel Meiring, ER24 Spokesperson, their paramedics arrived at the scene at 10.30am.
”Another emergency service arrived at the same time, and upon arrival, authorities were already in attendance. On closer inspection, paramedics found the newborn wrapped in a plastic bag inside the bin, located outside the complex. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for the newborn,” Meiring said.
Details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigation.
According to Mathys van Rensburg, the chairman of the West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch, the body of the baby was discovered just before 9am, and he explained, ”The recycling people went through the dustbins to recycle whatever they can get. One of them took the plastic Checkers bag out of the bin because he thought it was meat. He placed the bag on the pavement and continued with the dustbin. When collecting everything of value to him, he opened the bag and discovered the body of the baby. He then put the bag back into the bin. A Lindhaven resident contacted the neighbourhood watch patrollers. On arrival at the scene, we secured the area and phoned the Roodepoort Police, and upon their arrival, we handed the secured scene over to them.”
