The nationwide lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic has taken its toll on many a business, including sporting organisations.
One of the organisations that is really battling during this time is the Sables Bowling District, which has 11 bowling clubs under its wing.
They are Discovery, Florida North, Honeydew, Krugersdorp, Leases, Maraisburg, Noordheuwel, Randfontein, Ruimsig, Rustenburg and Witpoortjie Bowling Clubs.
George Nysschen, president of the Witpoortjie Bowling Club said, “The Sables Bowling District would like to thank our President, Cyril Ramaphosa for outstanding work. However, with the total lockdown also affecting clubs, we have been left with big financial problems.”
He added that over the years, the clubs’ maintenance was covered with money raised by hosting events, tabs in matches, hiring out the clubs’ halls, and sponsorships at times.
“For the last year or more, we have been working hard to commit the youth to taking part in this discipline. We have shared our facilities with numerous political parties, churches, schools and many others,” George said.
He explained that, in order for them to continue paying for maintenance, staff wages, machinery and fertilisers, each and every club will need help. That is why they have decided to approach the community to help them with donations.
“We can assure you that all donations received will be given to the other clubs on merit. Once clubs have re-opened, we will offer special rates on hall hire, fun days and more at certain clubs as a way to give back,” he said.
