One resident, Sibongile Lesenjane drew up a petition.

“We need speed humps because drivers are speeding and disobeying traffic laws. Children and the elderly walk along these streets.”

The petition can be found by clicking here.

To date, the petition has almost 1 000 signatures and is gaining support fast.

The councillor for Ward 71, René Benjamin, said she was aware of the petition that residents had started.

“I was made aware of the incident, and also of a petition of which a copy will be sent to me. The process of requesting speed-calming measures has to go through the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). I have been discussing it with JRA before, and the accident unfortunately is a sad way to motivate the request.

A letter of concern, of course detailing the tragic accident to motivate the request for speed-calming measures, was sent to JRA, which has forwarded the request to the chief road inspector to look into the matter,” she said.

She added that only JRA could decide which speed-calming measures will be the most suitable to implement after assessing all relevant information.

“I have been trying for a while to get a four-way stop put up at that intersection, but unfortunately motorists have proved time and time again that to them a stop sign is only a go-slow sign, which is frequently ignored,” she concluded.

Eric Tshikhudo from JRA confirmed that the ward councillor submitted all reports, which JRA forwarded to the relevant department.
