The more the coronavirus pandemic tests the strength of the community’s spirit, the tighter it binds them together in defiance.
Whether against internal or external forces, the commitment community members show towards those in need knows no bounds. Resources are stretched and the fear that adequate hygiene products can fall down the list of priorities is ever present.
Watch here:
“With the pandemic’s economic effect, the forced choice between food and sanitary wear is a painful one,” stressed Layla Mohamed, Roodepoort’s beacon of feminine hope and leader of the #18GirlChild project.
Layla has been working tirelessly throughout the lockdown, collecting items like facecloths, toothbrushes and soap to go with her core donations of female hygiene products. The latest organisation to give its backing to the young humanitarian is Liberty Compassion, the justice arm of Liberty Church in Ferndale.

Together they have amassed over 200 packs and have distributed them to young girls in need in various areas around Roodepoort.
Liberty Compassion themselves have distributed over 1 000 food parcels and 11 000 sandwiches so far during the lockdown, and also feed up to 300 adults and children daily via their soup kitchens. The road ahead is long but her resolve is concrete.

“#18GirlChild will continue to assist any girls who cross our path after all the stages of lockdown. We know that things will not magically get back to how they once were before this pandemic and a lot more girls will need help, so we are ready to work twice as hard to ensure that we are able to make a difference,” trumpeted the ever-inspirational Layla.
