The bus was proceeding along South Road towards the bend, when the driver realised the settlement’s residents had blocked the road with tyres. He tried to reverse the bus, but that only worsened matters. One of the protesters threw a petrol bomb at the bus, and set it alight. The petrol bomb hit one of the women in the bus, and she suffered burns to her head, upper body and arms.

The bus driver then drove the bus to the corner of Albertina Sisulu Road and Wilgespruit Street where they encountered JMPD officials who had closed the road due to the protests. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment while the rest of the passengers were transferred to another bus.
