Celebrating 60 years of golf
60th anniversary celebrated with a few rounds of golf
“We are celebrating the Durban Deep Golf Club’s 60th anniversary today, and I am quite pleased with the support,” said Mark Anthony.
Mark is the club’s new manager, and took over the reins in October last year. “Although the anniversary was actually in March, we decided to celebrate later, in October, as we felt we were not ready and it was very short notice,” he said.
The occasion was celebrated with a golf day in the form of a individual Stableford event. “We had quite a few of the club’s old members participating today, and even the former club chairman played a round,” Mark said.
He explained that they are a humble club and would love to have the schools and churches in the area use their facilities when they have golf days, or just to have the youngsters come and play a round. “Our tariffs are quite competitive, which means that the organisation having its golf day with us, would raise more money. We would also like to encourage the youngsters to come and play a round of golf at the club during the week, which is free – they only have to pay for their food,” he said.
Mark said that the biggest concern is safety, but, “It is actually safer than most people think, especially during the day.
We are on the course 24/7, and are able to see exactly what is going on, and where. We also have security guards who patrol the course.”
He added that they would love to grow their membership count, and said that they have started repairing the greens and also have some sponsors aboard. “We need more feet to ensure the continued existence of the club. Our course is a pitch-and-play course, meaning anyone, no matter whether you are a beginner or a professional, can play. The cost to play on a Saturday or Sunday is R100 per non-member and R80 per member,” said Mark.
The membership fees for next year will be R1 000 per person for the year, and includes the golfer’s handicap card. “Our fees are some of the lowest around, and that is because we want to encourage everyone – young and old – to join, as playing golf has many benefits. He concluded by saying, “Golf is a sport that helps with discipline, patience, motor skills, motivation and so much more. It is a sport that you play against yourself, and you will always strive to be better than you were yesterday.”
