Fourteen boxers competed at the recent South African schoolboys and -girls championships and did very well.
The championships took place in Thabong, Welkom, and the Gauteng team bagged 11 medals – nine gold, one silver and one bronze. Three fighters were unopposed (no opponents to box against), and received medals of merit for attending the championships.
Two boxers from the Vikings Boxing Academy – Amahle Msomi and Andrew Salhab – also competed at the championships.

According to Phillip du Rand, the head coach at the Boxing Academy, “Both my boxers did very well. Amahle fought very hard, and advanced to the final round where he boxed masterfully to win the title on a split decision.”
He added that Andrew unfortunately did not have an opponent in his weight division and received a medal of merit for attending the championships.
“Both these boxers will be moving up to the junior division where they will compete for the next two years but where the competition will also be much harder. We expect them to go from strength to strength,” said Phillip.
The Gauteng team was also crowned as the champions in the team competition.
Phillip concluded by thanking their sponsors, Tony Mestre from Witpoortjie Spar and Jan Oberholzer from Rawson Northcliff, and said, “We thank them for their generous sponsorship and investment in the future of our boxers”.
