Bryanston Drive becomes dumping ground

BRYANSTON – Residents are concerned with the amount of illegal dumping taking place in Bryanston.

Bryanston residents have been left frustrated with illegal dumping and several other problems on Bryanston Drive.

Michael Thomas, a resident that has lived in the area for six years said the dumping had been going on for a few months in front of a property that had been vacant for about two years.

“The substation next to the [vacant] property has also been broken into,” he said. “A neighbour has also had a break-in because the property is not secured.”

Thomas said criminals stripped cables from the substation and there were also exposed cables that have been dug up and left.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp is concerned about the issue. “Pikitup will have to come and remove all the rubble that has been dumped there,” he said, adding that it would take a few big trucks to remove all of it.

Earp said the vacant property needed to be properly secured by the owners. “It [property] also looks like a builders yard and building control will need to come and investigate. It is evident that this site is being used to strip cables.”

Earp added that the police and Metro police needed to be made aware that the property was being used for cable stripping.

Referring to the rubble Earp said, “Dumping is rampant in Bryanston with sub-contractors dumping anywhere. Residents need to make sure where their rubble goes.

“Residents should stop and take photos of the perpetrators when they see dumping take place and report it to the [Metro police.”

Regarding the substation, Earp said City Power needed to attend to it. “The gates on the lock have been broken, there are exposed wires and a gap in the wall means easy entrance to anyone.”

City Power had not responded to queries at the time publishing.
