Ward committee elections coming up

JOHANNESBURG – Ward committee elections are around the corner and here are the details.

The City of Johannesburg is in the process of electing new ward committee members for the new political term to assist the ward councillors and council in achieving its objectives of local government in terms of the Municipal Structures Act and the Constitution of South Africa.

Residents and stakeholders are invited to attend a two-hour information sharing session which will focus on election processes on 25 October at 6pm at Marks Park Sports Club, Colonial Hall.

In a statement issued by the office of the City of Joburg Council, it was explained that the ward committee election preparations are underway. “It is with great pleasure that I announce the start of the ward committee election process. The nomination process will be open from 1 November until 25 November and the nomination forms will be available in all municipal offices, facilities and the City’s website.”

The election process will run from 28 January to 11 February next year.

“A ward committee consists of community representatives who are elected into a portfolio of their choice, to play a supportive and advisory role to the ward councillor.”

It was further explained that in the 135 wards in the city, 10 community members will be elected to represent one of the 10 Mayoral Portfolios, which will only be valid for five years.

“The establishment of appropriate structures is pivotal for efficient service delivery. This process encompasses the community education phase, nomination phase and election phase. There is currently civic education that has started across all regions in order to help educate the community on the role and function of ward committees.”

According to the City, it is incredibly important for the community to be involved in the election of ward committees in order to ensure proper representation of their views in council. The election process will be overseen by the IEC for the purpose of transparency and fairness.

“I, therefore, urge you all to partake in these elections and to also raise awareness and interest in public participation.”
