Kayden Eckert, 11, of the 1st Bryanston Saturday Pack has been presented with the pinnacle of Cub Scouting achievements – the Leaping Wolf Badge.
Eckert is the first Cub from the 1st Bryanston Saturday pack to achieve this sought-after award.
Richard Salt, one of the adult leaders at the Saturday Pack said, “This is a phenomenal achievement that Kayden earned in such a short period of time. The Cub group began in April last year and most Cubs take years to achieve at this level. This is the equivalent of achieving a Springbok Scouting Award for Cubs.”
This award is a personal challenge where the child works independently from the Cub group and which must be completed before the Cub’s 11th birthday. Kayden was required to complete a number of tasks over and above regular Cub activities to reach this Cubbing milestone. With the supervision of a skilled metalsmith, he made and sharpened his own knife. A few of the tasks included planting a food garden, conducting extensive research into endangered species and completing some advanced interest badges.
The Leaping Wolf Badge is the highest award achievable as a Cub. It is also the only Cub advancement badge that can be worn as a Scout.
Eckert, who attends Crawford Lonehill Preparatory School said, “It was a lot of hard work, but fun to do. I am proud to have done it in the time I had.”
Salt added, “Right from the start, Kayden was committed 150 per cent and was dedicated to the group. This achievement is exceptional and he is a great example to the rest of the pack.”
Scouting is an outdoor-based educational programme which equips young people with skills and self-confidence to become future leaders in their communities.
The 1st Bryanston Scout Group meets regularly for Cubs (aged seven to 11) and Scouts (from 11 to 18) at their hall at the intersection of West Hertford and Grosvenor Roads.
