Many South Africans are eagerly awaiting their opportunity to vote on 8 May in the national and provincial elections.
The Sandton Chronicle spoke to Grade 6 learners of King David Sandton who are learning about democracy. The learners shared what their serious plans would be as well as some of their fun and outlandish ideas if they could be president. This is included as part of Caxton’s #IMadeMyMark elections coverage.
ROSS RAVEN: I would like for education to be equal, so no one gets a better or worse education so that everyone would be able to learn the same knowledge and understand the same problems that we have throughout our country and the world and they can learn everything about any job they would like to have in the future. For his fun idea he added: I would like to grow fruit trees everywhere so that people can just come and take whatever they want.
ALEXA REUBENSON: My main goal would be to stop corruption and have fair rights for everyone. I would like to make sure that each family has money so that they can afford food and have a healthy life. For her fun idea she added: I’m obsessed with chips and tennis so I’d make a tennis court out of chips.
MIKAELA SUCHARD: I would make sure that every person feels safe and comfortable in South Africa. We would get rid of poverty and there would be a lot more free schools and I would want to make sure that everyone gets paid the same, so no matter what you do everyone gets paid the same. For her fun idea she added: I would like to pick up every person on the side of the road and take them to a fancy restaurant so they could have a nice meal.
JESSE MAYERS: First of all, I would make sure that everyone gets paid a fair salary for the work they do. I would also create better government schools for the less fortunate and make sure that children also get fed there [ at school]. For his fun idea he said: I would like to make money grow on trees.
RAQUEL MEYEROWITZ: It would obviously take lots of time but I would make sure that all the money goes to the right places and try to stop corruption. I would want to make sure that very poor people who can’t go to school get free education and I would make sure it’s good. For her fun idea she added: I would hand out hot chocolate on cold days and ice cream on warm days.
