Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy learners celebrate fantastic results
LYME PARK – Top achievers from the maths and science academy celebrated their results during an awards ceremony.
The Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy Saturday School Programme recently celebrated a successful Grade 9 Programme awards ceremony hosted at St Stithians Girls’ College.
More than 1 100 Grade 9 to 12 learners from around Gauteng attend extra tuition sessions on selected Saturday mornings at St Stithians College to sharpen their learning skills in mathematics, the sciences, accounting and English. This past term, 400 Grade 9 learners were involved in the popular programme.
Following baseline assessments done in February, the Grade 9 learners were again assessed by the Thandulwazi teachers and tutors in May on their current curriculum work. The top achievers have now been rewarded for their achievements.
The programme is named after the isiZulu word which means ‘the love of learning’. The Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy was established by the St Stithians Foundation. It was initiated in 2005 out of the need for effective action in addressing the critical issues pertaining to the teaching of maths and science in schools in and around Gauteng.
The programme focuses on four main areas which include the Saturday School, a teacher development programme, an intern-teacher training programme and a learner sponsorship programme.
The project helps contribute to the upliftment of young learners and is made possible by generous donors and supporters.
