Fire Station hosts Captain Courage cadets

SANDTON – Ten boys became junior fire fighters for a day as Reach for a Dream took its Captain Courage project to Sandton Fire Station.

Under its Captain Courage project, Reach for a Dream hosted 10 boys from the Thelle Mogoerane Hospital in Vosloorus at the Sandton Fire Station on 14 September. The project is aimed at educating and exposing children between the ages of three and 18, who are fighting life-threatening illnesses, to the adventures of life.

With a little show-and-tell, the young boys were given some insight into what the life of a firefighter really entails – which, of course, included learning how to slide down a fire escape pole.

The young ‘firefighters in training’ were given the full experience, learning about fire drills as well as practising how to put out an actual fire. “The boys had a great adventure and demonstrated their courage,” Jodi Joffe from Reach for a Dream said.

Of course, the experience could not end without a ride in the fire truck – flashing lights and sirens galore. “We are so proud of each of our dreamers,” she commented.

At the end of the day, each boy received a medal and certificate to commemorate their experience, reminding them of their ability to overcome any of life’s challenges and obstacles which includes their illness.

“A day spent at Captain Courage allows children to focus on a day of fun, and to forget about their illness, while enjoying themselves romping outdoors in the sun,” Joffe concluded.
