Zoom Zuma facts

SANDTON - Police have released more details about Duduzane Zuma being investigated for culpable homicide.

President Jacob Zuma’s son was involved in an accident with a taxi in Sandton on 1 February which killed one person and critically injured two other people. The Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner, detective services, Major General Tebello Mosikili announced on 19 February that the investigation had been finalised. He said a case docket had been presented to the office of the Department of Public Prosecution for a decision to be made on whether there was a case to be pursued or not.

He said, “The accident was the subject of media scrutiny and we wanted to put the facts to the public.” It was alleged that Zuma was driving a Porsche on the M1 South towards Johannesburg when he was involved in the accident with a taxi. “The accident took place in close proximity to the Grayston Drive off-ramp,” said Mosikili. “The taxi was travelling in the same direction but in the far left lane of the M1 South. According to both drivers the road was wet as it was raining heavily at the time.”

He said Zuma alleged that while he was travelling in the right lane he drove through a deep pool of water that caused him to lose control of his vehicle. “His vehicle reared off to the left of the highway and collided with the taxi,” said Mosikili. “The taxi driver lost control and the vehicle fell over onto its right side damaging the right rear of the vehicle and the Porsche was damaged on the left front side.”

He added that Zuma sustained injuries to his hand and the taxi driver was not injured. “The accident scene was attended to by the Johannesburg Metro Police and a case of culpable homicide was then opened,” he said.
