Fundraising dinner raises thousands for student bursaries

SANDTON – The South African Institute of Black Property Practitioners recently raised R300 000 for tertiary education.

The South African Institute of Black Property Practitioners (SAIBPP) recently hosted its 1st Annual Fundraising Golf Day and Dinner at the Bryanston Country Club in Johannesburg.

The objective of the event was to raise funds for the institute’s Bursary Fund and Student Chapters, to which 50 per cent of all funds raised will be channelled.

The institute’s bursary fund is now in its fourth year and was created to enable access to tertiary education for aspiring and current students with financial need who are pursuing full-time studies in property or related studies.

President of the institute, Nkuli Bogopa said this fundraiser is because of their partnerships with several universities and their student chapters. “We see the need to come into the area of skills development by way of bursaries and fundraising for education in our sector.”

This is not the first bursary programme they had, they had a previous programme where they assisted two students.

Bogopa said because it was a pilot phase and they were sponsored from their first year up till their fourth year. “We also took into account all of the costs of going to University and not only tuition fees,” said Bogopa.

She said they have seen the success of the programme and for 2019, they have 40 students on a waiting list. “The criteria are very strict and they have to be committed and passionate about the sector and their studies.”

At the moment the beneficiary list is from the University of Witwatersrand but they are looking at rolling it out at their other universities depending on the available funds.
