Brandy cocktail route reaches Joburg

JOBURG - Lovers of life's finer things will be pleased to know that the Urban Brandy Cocktail Route has finally reached Johannesburg.

The route will encompass a variety of restaurants, bars and night-time hotspots, and will feature a specially developed menu of local premium brandy-based cocktails.

The South African Brandy Foundation’s Christelle Reade-Jahn described the route as a “modern urban extension of the R62 and Western Cape brandy routes” that “speaks volumes” about the evolution of the drink.

“The route celebrates the sunshine spirit’s rise from its more traditional role to its emergence as a sophisticated, modern spirit of unrivalled quality and versatility, and places this iconic local elixir where it belongs — firmly in the spotlight,” she said.

Joburg venues include Rosebank’s Kong, Hush and the Circle Bar at the Crowne Plaza hotel; Melrose Arch’s African Pride and the Fire and Ice hotel; and Sandton’s Radisson Blu Sandton and Radisson Blu Gautrain hotels, as well as the Park Inn.

“The popularity of the route continues to delight us,” said Reade-Jahn.

“What’s more, [it] inspired mixologists to delight a whole new generation of consumer, using modern techniques and unique, refreshing flavour combinations. “Cocktail lovers [can] view and experience quality South African brandy in a whole new light.”

The route was launched in Cape Town in March last year, with an initial listing of five city-based hotspots.

The route expanded to include venues in other areas of the Mother City, including Hout Bay and Blouberg.
