Vocal tribute to jazz great

SANDTON - Cat Simoni sang the life back into the memory of America’s First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald.

The Auto and General Theatre on the Square in Sandton played host to a show based on the life story of the jazz great.

Simoni told the astonishing tale of Fitzgerald at the opening night of Cat Sings Ella on 14 May.

In her own incomparable way, Simoni celebrated the spirit of Fitzgerald’s music in this musical cabaret. The show, which is written, directed and presented by Paul Spence, will be on stage until 24 May.

The audience sang along to the classics and clapped vigorously in appreciation after every song. “I was there in the front row, I’ve seen Ella live and she was magnificent,” said Gertie Awerbuch, an audience member.

Daphne Kuhn, Auto and General Theatre on the Square manager said, “Simoni’s years of entertaining the international crème de la crème on the Bechsteins and Steinways at London’s five star hotels and exclusive clubs with her sublime voice and extraordinary piano virtuosity, laid the perfect foundation for Cat Sings Ella.”
