Art on a plate!

AUCKLAND PARK – In celebration of International Chefs' Day, pupils participated in a cooking workshop.

Nestlé South Africa partnered with World Association of Chefs’ Societies (Wacs) and the South African Chefs Association (Saca) based in Auckland Park, to celebrate International Chefs’ Day on 20 October 2016. Pupils from Byandale Primary School in Bryanston were selected to participate in a cooking workshop.

Saca’s ,World Chefs Tour Against Hunger coordinator, Bridget Gunner said that the global theme for International Chef’s Day was Art on a Plate, which raises awareness about healthy eating.

“The pupils prepared two dishes of pre-prepared food and were taught techniques of how to prepare dishes. Through the programme, we want to encourage kids to eat healthy meals, such as the fruit and vegetables we included in our menu. Each participant chose a recipe out of 26 recipes and we chose 12 of those for the South African market,” explained Gunner.

Pupils from different grades eagerly listened to preparation instructions from Nestlé’s resident chef, Sizwe Cebekhulu, who helped them prepare each dish. They were encouraged to use their creativity when creating their dishes.

Byandale’s Grade 3 teacher, Mary-Anne Pepper said that the pupils who participated were selected based on who was most deserving and a hard worker in their unique ways.

Pupil and participant, Akhona Ngcobo said he enjoyed the opportunity to express himself through cooking.

“I usually help my mom prepare meals at home and I enjoy making breakfast and dinner. The chefs have been very helpful and kind,” said Ngcobo.
