Find a hidden gem at the antiques fair at Nelson Mandela Square
SANDOWN – The antiques fair, which is the oldest and longest running antiques fair, will take place on 4 March.
The monthly antique fair, hosted at Nelson Mandela Square will display a wide variety of goods for any antique lover.
The monthly antique fairs are organised by Clyde Terry who is an antique dealer in Melville, Johannesburg and Giuli Osso.
Osso said, “The monthly Antique Fair was started over 30 years ago taking place at the Sandton Sun Hotel in Sandton. The Antique Fair, which takes place on the upper and lower levels of Nelson Mandela Square has grown over the years and now attracts over 50 antique dealers who come from all over the country to exhibit on the first Sunday of every month.”
Osso added that some of the antique dealers have been doing the fair for over 25 years and have built up a strong following. Many are specialists in specific fields, such as dealing exclusively in silver or coins or specialising in porcelain or watches.
There are also newer antique dealers join that cater to the more ‘modern’ collectables such as 20th-century modern glassware or collectables from the 1950’s to the 1970’s which can include everything from advertising boards, Barbie dolls to old gramophones.
Dealers who wish to become part of the fair are governed by the National Antiques and Decorative Arts Association which monitors and checks that all the dealers participating in the fairs have the necessary licenses to operate as second-hand dealers.
Collectors of rare manuscripts, stamps maps and books will be able to browse the various items on sale, while others might enjoy vintage clothing like flapper dresses from the 20’s or pop-art accessories from the 60’s.
