DJ, a musician and overall cool guy, Matthew Malcolm, better known as DJ Flax of youth station YFM, is blowing up the radio world.
Stepping right onto the scene, Flax knew that the entertainment industry was his calling.
“I didn’t quite know what I was going to do. I went through all the basic stuff, the sort of obvious choices and I thought I could imagine nothing worse than that.
Luckily for me, my mom was a teacher and one of her learners had a mom in the industry. It actually happened that it was Catherine Grenfell and she invited me to shadow her at the station,” he said.
And after that visit Flax was sold.
“I shadowed and after the first day, my whole world changed… I was in awe.”
Following the natural process, Flax worked his way up the ladder and landed his own weekend slot.
You can catch him on YFM on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm doing what he does best.
“Both of my shows on Saturdays and Sundays have some different themes. The first one is called ‘Throwback Riot’ which focuses on old school music and one of the nice things is that people really reminisce with it. On Sunday, we tune into ‘Sunday Feels’ it’s a show with general awareness around musicality.”
Musically inclined, he is also working on some new music and the public can possibly look forward to him dropping an EP sometime this year.
As a Douglasdale resident, he loves the shift taking place in the area.
“There’s a change in the dynamic of the area. For the longest time it was easy to differentiate the culture of the two suburbs of Fourways and Sandton, now we can see a lot more creativity and a dynamic edge. I’m excited for the possibilities to come,” he said.
He concluded that his future plans included more content creation and telling the stories of South Africans. He also just recently became involved in a relationship so we can expect some major Valentine’s plans from Flax this year, hopefully.
