Auto & General Theatre on the Square garners six Naledi nominations

SANDTON – Auto & General Theatre on the Square nominated for six Naledi Theatre Awards in various categories over the Easter weekend.

Over the Easter weekend, the Naledi Awards announced the nominations for productions staged during 2019. Theatre on the Square was afforded six nominations in various categories.

The 2019 line-up was a thrilling time for them at the theatre. Not only was there a feast of theatre with prolific productions featuring top local comedians and musicians, but it staged a wealth of new South African and international plays.

Several theatrical gems took to the boards on our intimate stage. These showcased many of their South African talents, through stories and crafted productions.

The play Gertrude Stein and a companion was accredited with three nominations – for Best Production of a Play produced by Daphne Kuhn and Authentik, directed by Chris Weare. The leading actresses, Lynita Crofford and Shirley Johnson were each nominated for the Best Actress Award.

Sello Sebotsane was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his comedic role in Josias (Dos) Moleele’s Call us crazy production.

Jessica Wolhuter was nominated for Best Breakthrough Performance for her role as young Tracy Going in their production of Brutal Legacy, directed by Lesedi Job with actress and writer, Natasha Sutherland and Charlie Bourgenon.

Clint Lesch was nominated in the category Best Original Score/Arrangement/Adaptation for the adaptation of the innovative take on the opera, Aida abridged in collaboration with director Greg Homann.

These nominations reinforce the work they do to promote and present varied and legitimate pure theatre – offering vital creative work opportunities for the industry and upliftment for all through invaluable entertainment. This gives a glimpse of hope for the industry during these trying and unprecedented times.

They assure their fans that Theatre on the Square will be fired up and ready to entertain and stimulate audiences as life returns to the normality.
