When rains start, water and rubbish will collect inside the trenches and the street will be flooded.
Ward 91 councillor, Andrew Stewart said he had been inundated with phone calls from concerned residents. The residents have complained about two major trenches on Helen Road.
“The first trench is by Strathavon Mews, which has been left uncovered for as long as eight to nine months,” said Stewart.
“The second trench is by the corner of Daisy Road and it has been left uncovered for approximately seven to eight weeks. It is good that parts of Strathavon’s aging pipe infrastructure are being replaced.”
Stewart said he did not understand why trenches were such a major problem, since the purpose of the digging was to refurbish whatever needs mending underground and to close the hole afterwards.
“I don’t see why the trenches can’t be covered after the job is completed,” he added. “Residents who live at Strathavon Mews have been calling the councillors for almost eight months to get the trenches closed.”
He added that Ward 91 inspector, Susan Hlatswayo had reported the trenches to the Johannesburg Water Department on a number of occasions. “I have even called and emailed the department’s manager a number of times over the last four months about the trenches,” he said.
“Finally, I even escalated the matter to the department’s deputy director, Ettienne Hugo. “But I have still not seen any action on the matter.”
